Public Health Awards in conjunction with the North Dakota Public Health Conference

Award Descriptions
  1. Excellence in Public Health Promotion and Prevention: Recognizing outstanding projects or initiatives significantly advancing health promotion and disease prevention efforts. This award highlights innovative education campaigns, preventive care programs, or interventions that have improved health literacy, reduced risk factors, and contributed to healthier communities.
  2. Excellence in Innovation: Honoring groundbreaking projects, tools, or methodologies that exemplify creativity and forward-thinking in public health. This award celebrates the use of novel technologies, strategies, or partnerships that have transformed traditional public health approaches and led to measurable improvements in health outcomes.
  3. Spirit of Public Health: Acknowledging individuals or projects that embody the essence of public health through exceptional dedication, resilience, and community engagement. This award is for initiatives that have united communities, addressed critical health challenges, and exemplified the commitment to improving the well-being of diverse populations.
  4. Spirit of Community Engagement: Honoring programs or interventions that strengthen community connections. This award recognizes efforts to expand access, enhance participation, and create supportive environments in public health research, policy, or practice.

Eligibility and Nomination Criteria
Individuals, programs, or initiatives led by:

  • State, Local, and Tribal Governments: Public health departments, agencies, or projects under governmental leadership.
  • Community-Based Organizations (CBOs): Nonprofit or grassroots organizations addressing public health at the community level.
  • Universities and Academic Institutions: Research teams, university-led projects, or student initiatives focused on public health advancement.
The nominee’s work must align with the award descriptions and show direct contributions to the respective category. Projects can be ongoing or recently completed (within the last two years) to ensure relevance. Demonstrated measurable impact on public health outcomes, such as but not limited to improved access, behavioral changes, policy influence, or disease control. Evidence of innovation, including creative approaches, use of technology, or novel methodologies that address complex public health challenges. Initiatives demonstrating successful partnerships across sectors, including community groups, governmental entities, private organizations, and academia, will be prioritized. 

Nomination Process
The nomination period will be from February 1 to March 21, 2025. Awards will be announced during the closing plenary of the Public Health Conference from 10:45-11:45 a.m. on May 21, 2025. 

Nominations will be taken by submitting the online form. We will need the nominee(s) name, contact information, award category, a brief description of the work and impact on public health, and any other supporting documentation deemed necessary for the award committee. Nominations must tie explicitly to the project’s achievements and the goals and criteria outlined in the award description. Nominations can be submitted by third parties or through self-nomination. Nominators must also provide their contact details and relationship to the nominee(s). Submissions will be anonymized during the review process to ensure fairness and impartiality. The review committee will include public health experts from diverse sectors.

Scoring Criteria
Impact (40%): Demonstrated success in achieving project goals and/or measurable improvements in public health outcomes.

Innovation (30%): Creativity and originality in approach or execution.
Collaboration (20%): Strength and breadth of partnerships and stakeholder engagement.

Sustainability and Scalability (10%): Potential for continued impact and replication in other contexts.
